Chester Then

Originally constructed by the Romans in 79AD as Castra Devana, Chester began life as the largest fortified Roman city in Britain.

Its’ purpose was to control the tribes in northern Wales and England and as a consequence the city boasts Roman walls (although added to and modified later) that encircle the old town giving the Chester the moniker “The Walled City”.

Abandoned when the Romans left in the 5th century, the city languished for almost 500 years until the Anglo-Saxons resettled and it is their legacy, rather than that of the Romans that give the city its’ distinctly medieval appearance.

The development continued throughout Saxon and medieval times when the city was the most important city in the north-west due to its port on the River Dee and led to the creation of the most photographed parts of the city.

Known as “The Rows” a series half-timbered galleries and above street-level shops lining streets in the centre – they date back to the 13th century.

Other landmarks include the medieval Chester Cathedral, originally an abbey church for a Benedictine monastery and the Eastgate Clock, a splendid example of Victorian style, it was built in 1897 to mark the Silver Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
